Precision in Motion: How Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is Transforming Cancer Treatment
For decades, the greatest paradox of radiation oncology was a matter of movement. While linear accelerators could generate powerful, tumor-destroying energy beams, the human body is inherently dynamic. Tumors shift with every breath we take, every heartbeat, and every digestive movement. Even with the strictest positioning molds, a patient’s internal anatomy can change subtly from one day to the next.
Traditionally, radiation oncologists solved this problem by widening the treatment margins—directing radiation across a slightly larger area to ensure the cancer wasn’t missed. Unfortunately, this meant healthy tissue caught in the crossfire absorbed radiation too, often leading to significant side effects.
