Beyond the Classroom: Was Vikas Divyakirti Actually an IAS Officer?

If you have ever spent even a brief amount of time exploring the world of India’s civil services preparation, chances are you have encountered Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. With his distinctive voice, profound command over literature, history, and political science, and his viral lecture snippets, he is a household name for millions of UPSC aspirants.

Because of his authority on the subject and the immense respect he commands, a persistent myth often surrounds him: Was Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is no, he was not an IAS officer. However, the reality of his journey with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is fascinating in its own right, filled with academic rigor and a deliberate choice to walk a different path.

The Truth About His UPSC Journey

While Dr. Divyakirti did not secure a spot in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), he did crack one of the toughest examinations in the world.

  • The 1996 Attempt: Vikas Divyakirti appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1996 and successfully cleared it on his first attempt.
  • The Allotment: Rather than the IAS, his rank placed him in the Central Secretariat Service (CSS), another prestigious wing of the Group ‘A’ civil services in India.
  • The Brief Stint: He worked within the government bureaucracy for a short period, but his heart lay elsewhere. Driven by a deep passion for teaching, literature, and mentorship, he chose to resign from government service to pursue education full-time.

The Birth of Drishti IAS

Realizing that his true calling was to shape minds rather than file government paperwork, Dr. Divyakirti took a leap of faith. In November 1999, he founded Drishti IAS in a modest basement in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi.
